The Bundesliga outfit, Eintracht Frankfurt will wear the specially-designed limited-edition jersey in their German Cup semi-final tie against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night in order to show their solidarity.
Protests against systemic racism and police brutality have been held across the US and UK, as well as other parts of the world, following the death of African-American George Floyd in the process of his arrest by police last month.
Frankfurt will display the hashtag ‘#blacklivesmatter’ instead of their normal sponsor ‘Indeed’, which will feature in a smaller typeface below the message.
The shirt which has proved popular was sold out within a matter of hours.
“We have to point this out again and again, and also use the power and reach of football to forcefully deliver this important message to the world,” said Frankfurt board member Axel Hellmann.
“The history of Eintracht Frankfurt is shaped by cosmopolitanism and international understanding.
“These attributes are strongly anchored in the Eintracht DNA. Racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and homophobia have no place within the Eintracht family and must not have a place in a liberal society.” Axel concluded.
Sporting director Fredi Bobic added: “As a team and as Eintracht Frankfurt, we stand together against all forms of racism and want to convey it accordingly.”
